FGV?s Department of Public Policy (DAPP) will host a roundtable to discuss the influence of social networks in public policies during the III International Conference on Public Policy (ICPP), to be held in June 2017 in Singapore. Titled ?From voice to influence: how social media help shape public policy??, the panel will receive paper applications until January 15. Papers must be submitted to the conference?s website, organized by the International Public Policy Association (IPPA).The fast-paced universalization of new information and communication technologies and, more recently, social media, has definitively changed social and political relations in every aspect ? from public debate to the private segment. Several studies are attempting to shield politics and social collectives from this phenomenon?s aftermath, in addition to the organization ability of social groups of several different natures. Studies have proven that social media can affect these areas both at a macro level (politics, network societies, and social mobilization) and micro level (intersubjective relations). However, little is known about the actual transformations caused by social media in mid-level processes, such as public policies designed to quickly intervene in a society?s fund distribution process. While the dissemination of public discourse platforms is an undeniable reality, even in developing countries, the same cannot be said regarding the influence of social media over the entire cycle of public policies ? from its initial draft, application, and subsequent analyses. However, social media go beyond mere influence and open up a range of possibilities entirely new to the players in charge of public policies, who can use new alternatives to streamline the process from start to finish, drastically reducing political feedback and enhancing public initiatives and an accurate assessment of its impacts perceived by society. Therefore, papers submitted to the ?From voice to influence: how social media help shape public policy?? panel must discuss the role of social media in political and social processes, focusing on the impacts over the public policy cycle ? from its draft, deployment, impact assessments, evaluations and improvement. Considering the massive use of social networks as a new forum for public debate, and its underlying implications for public administration, proposals that also introduce new methods to monitor social media are also encouraged, focused on the assessment and enhancement of policies.
