FGV launches Nucleus for China-Brazil Studies

FGV’s Rio de Janeiro Law School (Direito Rio) has just launched the Nucleus for China-Brazil Studies, conceived with the mission of analyzing regulatory issues in Brazil, including advances made in this area and the challenges faced by Chinese companies. The Nucleus will also seek to explore the characteristics of Regulatory Law in BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), focused on the development of Rule of Law in China.

“The Chinese have a hard time understanding Brazilian tax and labor laws, as well as the country’s foreign investment regulations. China is a major investor in Brazil, having already invested USD 5.67 billion by mid April,” said Professor Evandro Menezes de Carvalho, who will head the research nucleus.

One of the initiatives slated for this year is a field study to be conducted with leading Chinese companies, aimed at determining the biggest barriers to investing in Brazil, among other goals.

Some professors from Rio de Janeiro Law School will travel to the Asian country to participate in events to promote the new Nucleus for China-Brazil Studies.  Events include the “1st Brics Think-Tank Forum on Pragmatic Cooperation,” to be held in Shangai – when the School will join the BRICS Think Tank Forum council –, and an event on BRICS Economy and BRICS Cybersecurity, which will take place in Chongqing.

The School will also welcome two delegations. A delegation from the Qiushi Journal, China’s most influential journal, is scheduled to visit on May 23. Published by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the journal covers world politics and the country’s foreign relations.  On May 22 and 23, the School will welcome members from the China Society for Human Rights Studies, the country’s leading academic institution on human rights issues, headed by its president, Qiangba Puncog.
