New Brazilian Education Ministry Committee aims to improve evaluation of students’ performance

Kaizô Iwakami Beltrão, a professor from FGV’s Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (EBAPE), has been appointed to the Advisory Committee for the Review of the Evaluation Processes, Data Collection Tools and Techniques, and Indicators for Higher Education of Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira (INEP). The committee is formed of experts in the evaluation of Higher Education, statistical studies, measurements and analysis of large-scale educational evaluations, statistical analysis techniques and methodologies applied to education and the construction of educational indicators.
The Advisory Committee aims to propose and review the improvement of evaluation and data collection instruments; create strategies to improve student performance evaluations and methodologies; help train and qualify civil servants, in addition to performing statistical tests and developing technical documents about proposals and demands related to Higher Education evaluation.
The group is linked to the Higher Education Evaluation Department (DAES), which coordinates the evaluation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and courses alongside federal and state education systems. The department is also responsible for calculating the Higher Education Quality Indicators and hosting the National Student Performance Exam (ENADE), as well as in loco HEI and courses evaluations. The DAES also organizes and qualifies the Bank of Reviewers of the National Higher Education Evaluation System (BASis); proposes international higher education evaluations along with foreign and international organizations; and coordinates the preparation of Higher Education evaluation instruments based on the National Higher Education Evaluation Committee’s guidelines.
