FGV’s Department of Public Policy Analysis (DAPP) participated in UFPR’s Academic Week of Economics on October 17. Researcher Wagner Oliveira joined the panel “(Im)migration Movements and Multiculturalism”, introducing the field of applied research in Immigration and Development of the DAPP.

Oliveira highlighted analyses on the impact of the migration of Venezuelans in Roraima, from the point of view of both migration policy and social media debates on the subject. Social media analysis was used to contextualize the electoral use of the migration agenda in light of the event of the Brazilian attack on Venezuelans in August.

“The issue of migration is still a subject that is rarely discussed in Brazil and the event was a very productive space to explore the contemporary issues that the topic introduces to the Brazilian reality through data analysis and empirical evidence. It was also an opportunity to bring this debate to undergraduate Economics students, one of the fields of knowledge that has been dedicated to the subject recently, in particular due to its potential impact on the job market. For the DAPP, it was an opportunity to publicize its work and engage with other entities that work with the theme, such as UFPR and Cáritas Brasileira”, said Wagner Oliveira.

The Panel also highlighted the need for federal government leadership, strategic policies based on data integration, the recognition of migrants’ skills, in addition to the demystification of the profile of the migrant population and the impact on the local economy. Elizete Sant’Anna and Márcia Ponce, from Cáritas Brasileira, and Márcio de Oliveira, a professor from UFPR’s Sociology department, also took part in the panel.

The event was held October 15-19 and included lectures and courses focused on plural economic perspectives for the world.
