The Consumer Price Index – Class 1 (CPI-C1) rose 0.61% in January – 0.29 percentage point (p.p.) above the 0.32% rate recorded in December. This places the indicator published by FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE) at an accrued high of 4.29% in the last 12 months.

In January, the CPI-BR rose 0.57%. The indicator’s rate for the last 12 months stood at 4.19% – below the CPI-C1.

Six of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded a higher price variation: Transport (-0.52% to 1.84%), Education, Reading and Recreation (0.66% to 2.00%), Housing (0.10% to 0.19%), Food (0.83% to 0.84%), Miscellaneous Expenses (0.09% to 0.27%), and Communications (-0.02% to 0.01%). The following items stood out in these expense categories: urban bus fare (-0.32% to 3.87%), formal courses (0.00% to 6.40%), household power bill (-1.05% to 0.12%), dairy products (-3.19% to 1.88%), notary office (-0.01% to 4.65%), and landline phone and internet packages (0.00% to 0.51%).

On the other hand, the Clothing (0.70% to -0.56%) and Health and Personal Care (0.29% to -0.02%) groups dropped in the period. The main drivers in these expense categories were Clothing (0.87% to -0.65%) and Personal Care and Hygiene Items (0.36% to -0.54%).
