Seminar discusses Social Security Reform and economic growth

The Social Security Reform is considered the main measure to stimulate economic growth in Brazil. To discuss the matter, FGV’s Sao Paulo School of Economics (EESP) is welcoming authorities and experts on the subject on May 10, starting at 9:00 a.m., for the Seminar “Reforma da Previdência e Crescimento Econômico” (“Social Security Reform and Economic Growth”). The event will be held at the FGV EESP auditorium (Rua Itapeva, 474, Bela Vista, Sao Paulo, SP).
The debate, promoted by the Center for Macroeconomic Research on Brazil, will bring together economists and political scientists to analyze the first months of the new administration, focusing on the impact of eventual approval of the Social Security reform on the country’s macroeconomic performance. The opening will be held by the National Secretary for Economic Policy, Adolfo Sachsida, who will be addressing public policy and its impact on economic growth. It will be followed by a debate on the Social Security reform and impacts on the economy, conducted by Professor Marcelo Kfoury (FGV EESP).
In this debate, economist Carlos Kawall (Banco Safra and FGV EESP) will be presenting an overview of the economic scenario and the consequences of the approval of the reform, discussing whether this is a necessary or sufficient condition to boost growth, and what will be the next steps in the fiscal sector. In turn, Rodrigo Azevedo (Ibiúna Investimentos) will be analyzing the reaction of the markets to the approved reform and the new steps of the monetary policy, in addition to an overview of the international economy and an analysis of the mood of the foreign investors regarding Brazil. Finally, political scientist Carlos Melo (Insper) will be discussing the difficulty of political articulation and the risks that this brings to the reform agenda.
