The Consumer Price Index – Low Income (IPC-C1) in December 2019 increased 0.93%, and it was 0.37 of a percentage point higher than in November, when the index registered a rate of 0.56%. As a result, the indicator, calculated by the FGV´s Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV IBRE), increased 4.60% year-over-year. In December, IPC-BR varied 0.77%. In the last 12 months, the indicator rose 4.11%, below IPC-C1.

In December, four of the index’s eight component spending classes saw increases: Food (0.60% to 3.08%), Transportation (0.19% to 0.82%), Health and Personal Care (0.11% to 0.31%) and Clothing (0.32% to 0.46%). Within these spending categories, the following items saw notable changes: Beef (7.56% to 16.02%), Gasoline (1.11% to 3.45%), Hygiene and Personal Care Products (0.22% to 0.66%) and Clothes (0.34% to 0.65%).

On the other hand, Housing (0.70% to -0.96%), Miscellaneous Expenses (2.48% to 1.40%), Education, Reading and Recreation (0.59% to 0.10%) and Communication (0.14% to 0.02%) experienced reductions in their rates. In these spending categories, there were noteworthy results for Residential Electricity Charges (2.85% to -5.40%), Lottery Tickets (26.16% to 10.21%), Airline Tickets (15.08% to -3.82%) and Residential Phone Charges (0.17% to -0.17%).
