Digital exclusion is subject of online debate

The Center for Public Administration and Government Studies (CEAPG) at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV EAESP), in partnership with the Graduate Engineering Study Center (COPPEAD), part of Rio de Janeiro Federal University, will hold a free webinar on digital exclusion on June 8, at 2 pm.

The subject of digital exclusion has been discussed in Brazil and across the world for more than 20 years, but the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed that countries in the Global South still suffer from it, especially the most vulnerable people. Digital technologies have greatly helped us tackle the health crisis arising from the pandemic, while changing many aspects of our lives, both personal and professional. Difficulties in accessing and using apps to access emergency welfare payments, school-age children without access to technology and the challenges of teleworking are some examples of situations faced by many Brazilians in the last 15 months.

The purpose of this event is to provide a different perspective regarding the digital divide, a topic that was neglected, before becoming essential with the advent of the pandemic. This will include reflections on preexisting social, political, economic and environmental issues. What actions will public and private sector managers, civil society organizations and international organizations take in order to reduce the consequences of digital exclusion? An overview of digital exclusion in Brazil and recent academic papers on different aspects of this subject will be presented by CETIC.br.

The speakers will be Alexandre Barbosa, the manager of CETIC.br; Javiera Macaya, a researcher at CETIC.br; Luiz Cláudio Mendes Vargas, who is doing a doctorate at COPPEAD; and André Alves, who is doing a doctorate at FGV EAESP. The moderators will be Maria Alexandra Viegas Cortez da Cunha, a professor and the coordinator of CEAPG; and Marie Anne Macadar, a professor and researcher.
