FGV holds second Brazilian edition of Summer Institute in Computational Social Science
Between June 19 and 30, 2022, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Department of Public Policy Analysis (FGV DAPP) will hold the second Brazilian edition of the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS), a computational social science training and research school founded in 2017. This year’s SICSS Brazil, based at FGV DAPP, will be coordinated by researchers Tiago Ventura, Daniel Trielli, Amaro Grassi, Lucas Roberto and Polyana Barbosa.
The event, organized by Professor Chris Bail of Duke University and Professor Matthew Salganik of Princeton University, takes place every year, bringing together doctoral students, postdoctoral students and professors. It consists of a main edition and various local editions, organized by former participants, at the same time as the main edition.
The first Brazilian edition of the event, also organized by FGV DAPP, occurred in 2021. Brazil is now hosting this event for the second year in a row, and FGV DAPP is again the local partner. Over the course of nearly two weeks, students will do training on computational social science methods with professors from SICSS’ main edition, FGV DAPP researchers and local guests, who will address topics such as social networks, natural language processing, image classification, web surveys, algorithm auditing and post-stratification of online surveys. They will also take part in discussions about the application of computational social science in academia and the job market.
The event will feature Leonardo Fernandes Nascimento, the coordinator of the Digital Humanities Lab at Bahia Federal University; Alexandra Siegel, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder; Pablo Boczowski, Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University; and Fernando Meirelles, a postdoctoral politics student at the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP).
