The Director of the School of Social Sciences (FGV/CPDOC), Celso Castro, was elected through a secret ballot, executive committee member of the research group on military and conflict resolution of the Sociology International Association (ISA). The committee has seven more scholars from South Africa, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Israel, Italy and the Netherlands. The research group has existed since 1970 and promotes dialogue among sociologists engaged in research on military and conflict resolution around the world. Its objective is to encourage the international exchange of research findings, theoretical developments and methodological approaches, and provide discussions on materials and teaching strategies aimed at undergraduate and graduate level courses.I was very pleased when I received an official notification from the current president (of the research group), Gerhard Kümmel, on the outcome of the election. The synergy generated by the international meetings and the collaboration in research is crucial to the formation of this field of study, said Professor Celso, who has just returned from a trip to Japan, where he attended the 18th World Congress of Sociology, held by the ISA.
