Events to launch book about main online conflict resolution platforms

The internet has caused the migration of business, legal and personal relationships to the digital environment. In this context, FGV Press and FGV Knowledge are launching a book titled “Resolução online de disputas: casos brasileiros” (“Online Dispute Resolution: Brazilian Cases”). The book is organized by Juliana Loss, the executive director of the FGV Chamber of Mediation and Arbitration; and Daniel Arbix, Google’s legal director. The book will be launched at the FGV Bookstore in Rio de Janeiro (Praia de Botafogo, 190, Botafogo) on July 8, at 6 pm, and then at Livraria Martins Fontes Paulista (Avenida Paulista, 509, Bela Vista) in Sao Paulo on August 25, at 6 pm.

The book addresses new relationship dynamics, which in recent years have reached the heart of legal debate: dispute resolution itself. It has become essential for legal professionals to understand new methods for settling and preventing disputes, as well as the use of technologies to optimize these procedures. This process also led to the emergence of conflicts on a new scale, as the internet has made it possible for relationships to happen in a more dynamic way, without time and space limitations. More than one relationship can now develop at the same time.

Thus, both the private sector and public sector need to delve deeper into online dispute resolution, given the challenges posed by the increasing use of the internet by all institutions, companies and society. This issue became even more urgent because of the pandemic, which definitively boosted the use of the internet for various operations and highlighted the benefits of opting for appropriate dispute resolution methods and consensus building between parties.

The book takes both theoretical and practical perspectives to examine some of the most important platforms operating in the Brazilian market. It is written by professionals who helped to design, implement and/or develop these platforms.

Given its broad scope, the book will be a point of reference for academic study and all those interested in better understanding the evolution of the use of technology in law in order to expand and improve access to justice. Researchers Ana Paula Brandt Dalle Laste, Fernanda Bragança and Renata Braga, as well as the book’s organizers, will be present at the two book launch events.
