Easter Basket is below inflation, according to IBRE

Good news for Brazilian families who are planning an Easter meal this year: according to the Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV/IBRE), the average increase in the prices of the items included in the Easter basket in the last 12 months was 2.84% - below the inflation in the same period last year, which was 6.09%, according to the Consumer Price Index (IPC).The institute points out that in 2013, consumers paid on average 48% more for the products used in the traditional lunch compared to 2012. The accumulated inflation from April 2013 to March 2014 was greater than the change of the basket - this shows that families should not experience difficulties in acquiring the same products in the previous year, says IBRE's researcher of the Inflation Associate Superintendent, André Braz. However, Braz warns that there are some villains. Despite this lower increase, the main dish - fresh fish - increased twice the inflation (12.71%), following similar pattern dynamics in the 2012-2013 period. Other complements of the table also increased more than inflation until March 2014: tuna (15.83%), cabbage (13.80%), eggs (7.89%), oil (7.67%) and preserved olives (7.50%). Whoever buys fish will be surprised, and it is important to note that product prices should increase further as we approach the date due to the demand, says the economist. In contrast, prices of traditional items such as cod (3.02%) and sweets and chocolates (1.16%) moved less than inflation, and therefore, showed no real increase. Braz also advises consumers to anticipate purchases in order to avoid higher prices due to the demand. Please click here and visit IBRE's website.
