FGV's Rio de Janeiro Law School students experience daily life in Brasília

About 70 undergraduate students from Rio de Janeiro Law School (FGV DIREITO RIO) visited the Três Poderes (The Three Powers) in Brasília on April 2, in order to understand how the Federal Supreme Court (STF), the Presidential Palace, the National Congress, the Ministry of Justice and the Foreign Ministry work. During their stay in the federal capital, students were able to talk to ministers, members of the parliament and civil servants. In the STF session, students talked with Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, who explained the function of the court. We, the STF, seek to establish legal propositions that can serve as basis for higher courts. It is also important to note that the most righteous and fair decision is not always the most popular. STF's role is always doing what is just and fair, he said. After the talk, students watched the session whose agenda was public financing of political campaigns. All ministers - except Dean Celso de Melo - were present. Before, students also visited the Ministry of Justice, where they were welcomed by the Secretary of Legislative Affairs of the Ministry of Justice (SAL/MJ) Marivaldo de Castro Pereira, who explained the possibilities for improvement of federal public policy. At the Presidential Palace, the students met the president's legal affairs deputy chief of staff, Ivo Corrêa. He talked about the legislative work in the Chief of Staff - such as the preparation of Provisional Measures and Messages of Bill to Congress - and stressed that the position's function is to reconcile the interests of other ministries that make up the Executive Branch. Finally, the group visited the National Congress and Rio Branco Institute. At the Legislature Power's main offices the group was welcomed by the federal congressman Otávio Leite (PSDB-RJ). At the Foreign Ministry, they were welcomed by Minister Sérgio Barreiros de Santana Azevedo - also Deputy Managing Director of Rio Branco Institute. This is the third time that FGV's Rio de Janeiro Law School holds the programa Visita aos Três Poderes (Visit the Three Powers) program, coordinated by Professor Thiago Bottino. Please visit the School's website below (in Portuguese).http://direitorio.fgv.br/
