The Center for Technology and Society at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Rio de Janeiro Law School is holding an international conference on May 19, called Cybersecurity and Cybercrime: Understanding Global Developments. The event will be livestreamed on FGV’s YouTube channel, starting at 10 am.
During the meeting, academics, experts, representatives of civil society institutions and government officials from many countries will discuss the impacts of cybercrime and threats to cybersecurity globally, paying special attention to circumstances in BRICS member countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). The webinar will explore the latest developments in the field of cybersecurity and cybercrime to understand how existing initiatives can help address cyberthreats.
The moderator will be the Center for Technology and Society’s coordinator, Luca Belli. The debaters will be Professor Ekaterina Martynova of the Higher School of Economics, Moscow; Professor Sizwe Snail of Nelson Mandela University, who is a former board member of South Africa’s Information Regulator; Professor Andrea Calderaro of the European University Institute and the University of Cardiff; and CyberBRICS Project Fellow Smriti Parsheera.
During the debate, the participants will seek answers to questions such as the following:
- “How can technology be misused to threaten fundamental rights?”
- “How can cyberattacks be attributed to specific actors?”
- “What does it mean for Brazil to have signed up to the Council of Europe Convention on Cyber Crimes?”
- “What is the UN doing to develop a common understanding of cybersecurity and cybercrime?”
- “What are the pros and cons of considering cybersecurity, data protection and cybercrime together, as is increasingly happening in South Africa?”
The event will take place entirely in English and there will be no subtitle options on the YouTube channel.
