Rio de Janeiro Law School discusses cyber conflicts at Harvard event

The meeting simulates discussions in committees and specialized UN agencies and it will be attended by hundreds of students from various countries, who will have a chance to gain experience working as actors in negotiating important issues in the contemporary international relations' agenda.

The researcher and manager of the Center for Technology and Society (CTS) of FGV's Rio de Janeiro Law School, Marília Maciel, will participate in the Harvard National Model United Nations Latin America - third edition of the event created with the objective of generating innovation in the debate on diplomacy through international cooperation, understanding of cultures, societies and beliefs of world populations.The meeting simulates discussions in committees and specialized UN agencies and it will be attended by hundreds of students from various countries, who will have a chance to gain experience working as actors in negotiating important issues in the contemporary international relations' agenda. Marília will speak about cyber security and conflicts within the committee that deal with disarmament, international security and cyber warfare.It is very important that students have contact with issues of great relevance, such as cyber conflicts. Several countries, including Brazil, included cyberspace in their national defense strategies. Policies and institutional mechanisms are being developed domestically; and internationally, there are processes to discuss joint actions in the area. It is necessary to prepare future professionals for these new challenges, says Marília.The Harvard National Model United Nations Latin America will be held in Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte state, on January 9th-12th, 2014.More information can be found on the event's website.
