Sustainable materials and methods in the search for the green certification

Besides being designed by Niemeyer, the complex and the Tower have another different feature: the concern with sustainability. Several measures were taken so that we could get the LEED certification, rating system developed by the Green Building Council dos EUA (USGBC) to measure the environmental performance of design, construction and maintenance of buildings, says FGV's Operations Director, Mario Rocha Souza. He mentions the use of certified wood, minimizing carbon emissions at all stages of production, reuse of water, the special treatment of construction waste, high efficiency cooling that meets environmental standards, automation system that avoids wasting power, and the use of armored bars that decrease dispersion in the power distribution system within the building.Another feature of the buildings is the fire system. Especially in this respect, we did much more than what was required by the standards, says Mario Rocha. The tower has two independent pressurized stairs (which prevent the entry of smoke), fire detection and a passive protection system, which prevents the fire from contaminating other floors. The Oscar Niemeyer Tower and the cultural center are located at Botafogo Beach, No. 186, in Rio de Janeiro.
