EBAPE analyzes reelection in the Journal of Politics in Latin America

The article Should I Stay or Should I Go? Explaining Political Ambition by Electoral Success in Brazil by the political scientist and professor of the Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (FGV/EBAPE), Carlos Pereira, was published in the Journal of Politics in Latin America, one of the latest and most promising journals dedicated to comparative politics in Latin America. The article, written in partnership with Professor Lucio Rennó, of the University of Brasília (UnB), focuses on the factors that influence both career choices and the electoral success of those who run for reelection, and those trying to get other political positions, using Brazil as a case study - since it already has a multiparty environment and a strong executive power.According to Professor Carlos Pereira, the study shows that the majority of members run for reelection in Brazil because this option offers less risk to the electoral survival of legislators. That is, the 'static ambition' is neither conditioned by the intrinsic desire to develop a career in law, nor because the legislative offers the best institutional and professional conditions to better run the mandate, he says. The Journal of Politics in Latin America is dedicated to promoting a deeper understanding of the political process and political institutions of the region.
