FGV EMAp and FGV CDMC participate in ETAPA SigmaCamp event
Fundação Getulio Vargas’ School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp) and Center for the Development of Mathematics and Science (FGV CDMC) took part in this year’s ETAPA SigmaCamp, an immersive international scientific program hosted by Brazil for the first time from January 14 to 20. Held at the ETAPA Education Center in Valinhos, Sao Paulo, ETAPA SigmaCamp brought together 60 exceptional students, aged between 14 and 16, from all over the country, chosen through a rigorous selection process. They included 10 students from NES/UFAL, a high school excellence project supported by Fundação Getulio Vargas. FGV CDMC student Arthur Oliveira also acted as an assistant.
The speakers included researchers from prestigious universities. The list of participating universities includes Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Stanford University, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Southern California, the University of Sao Paulo, Campinas State University, the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro, the Ilum School of Science and National Center for Energy and Materials Research (CNPEM) in Campinas, and Alagoas Federal University. Professor Guilherme Tegoni of FGV EMAp taught one of the event’s 10 mini-courses.
About the program
ETAPA SigmaCamp offers a week-long immersion in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), in which students take part in a variety of activities, including 9-hour mini-courses, over 50 workshops and 15 lectures. A special feature of the camp is a full-day visit to the facilities of Ilum and CNPEM, home to the Sirius particle accelerator.
FGV EMAp’s participation in ETAPA SigmaCamp exemplifies its commitment to cultivating the scientific and technological leaders of the future. The program is an opportunity for young minds to connect with an international community of scholars and peers, fostering a global perspective of STEM education.
