Discussing proposals on how to double per capita income in Brazil. This was the objective of the 10th Economics Forum - promoted by Fundação Getulio Vargas' São Paulo School of Economics (FGV/EESP) in partnership with the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp), the Institute of Studies for Industrial Development (IEDI) and the Interunion Department of Statistics and Socio-economic Studies (DIEESE).The general diagnostic among the speakers indicated that it is necessary to have a clear development strategy that favors industrial performance and that includes improvements in infrastructure, industrial policies, more competitive exchange rates and better targeting of public spending, says the executive coordinator of the Forum, EESP professor Nelson Marconi, who also says that the balance of the event was very positive. The forum was attended by the minister of Finance and professor of EAESP, Guido Mantega, the former minister of Finance, Agriculture and Planning, Antonio Delfim Netto, the Secretary of Economic Policy of the federal government and EESP professor, Marcio Holland, the professor of American University, Robert Blecker, besides other specialists from FGV and other research and teaching institutions in the country. On the first day, the highlight was the participation of the minister of Finance Guido Mantega, who stressed that Brazil can only double its per capita income in 20 years if it presents a 4% GDP growth per year. The second day was highlighted by the participation of the American University's professor, Robert Blecker, who pointed out the instability in the world economy, which caused changes in the productive structure of various countries. There was an intense discussion about whether growth through consumption is still the most indicated; the majority of speakers concluded that the model is outdated. The papers and presentations of the Forum are now available on EESP's website.
