FGV/EPGE - Graduate School of Economics held, on August 13, the lecture Demonstrations in Perspective: Political Reform and the Impact of Mega Events, with professors Fernando de Holanda Barbosa Filho, from FGV/EPGE, and Mariana Cavalcanti, from the School of Social Sciences (CPDOC). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the recent demonstrations in Brazil, with a focus on political reform and the major events that the country will host in the coming years. About the demonstrations, Fernando explained that, for the first time in the history of Brazil, the population has experienced the concept, much used in the Economy, of opportunity cost - everything that is lost when we make a particular choice. According to him, the protests began when people realized that the funds allocated to the construction of stadiums could be invested in other areas, such as education and health. Professor Mariana, on the other hand, emphasized that more reforms should be made for the well-being of the population and pointed out the great opportunity to discuss the role of the police in the Brazilian State due to the current historical moment. At the end of the lecture - which took place at FGV's headquarters in Rio de Janeiro - there was a debate among the students about their opinions and experiences regarding the recent demonstrations.
