FGV seminar discusses legacy of mega events in sports for the country

The legacy of mega events in sports hosted in Brazil discussed more in depth set the tone of the second edition of the seminar FGV Sports Management FIFA Master Alumni, which took place on August 7, in Rio de Janeiro. The seminar gathered managers, leaders and representatives of universities and businesses in the Theater Maison de France, in the center of Rio de Janeiro, to discuss the positive impacts that investments in sports can generate in the coming years. For the specialists who attended the event, the heritage left by the Confederations Cup - which took place in the June -, by the 2014 World Cup and the Olympic Games that Rio de Janeiro will host in 2016 must go beyond the construction and modernization of stadiums and urban infrastructure works. Society is distant from the matter. The greatest legacy is the immaterial things, and not only the physical ones. How can sports become a path to social transformation after major events?, asked the Business director of Grupo Lance, Afonso Cunha. According to the national secretary of Educational Sports of the Ministry of Sports, Ricardo Cappelli, the occurrence of mega events opened up space to structure public policies for the sport. This is the first legacy that we can already observe, pointed out the secretary, stating measures already underway as the Law of Incentive to Sport - which, according to Cappelli, has already collected more than BRL 860 million - and the 2016 Brazil Medals Plan. In addition to governmental measures, the seminar highlighted the importance of the qualification of managers for the modernization of sports. There is a lack of sports qualification and professionalization in Brazil, pointed out the vice-director of FGV's Educational Development Institute, Stavros Xanthopoylos, to make an assessment of the first year of the program Management, Marketing and Law in Sport, the result of a partnership of FGV with FIFA and the International Center for Sports Studies (CIES). The course was implemented in Brazil in the distance learning format, an unprecedented feat in the history of the qualification programs of CIES and FIFA. This (online) model shall be duplicated by CIES in other countries, assessed the CEO of the local Organizing Committee of the 2014 World Cup, Ricardo Trade.
