The social protests that erupted across the country over the last few days carry several flags. Behind each one of them, there is a growing outrage over some aspects of Brazilian reality. And to debate a new country, the Center for Applied Legal Research (CPJA) at São Paulo Law School, Rio de Janeiro Law School, São Paulo School of Business Administration and São Paulo School of Economics (EAESP and EESP), and the School of Social Sciences/CPDOC at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), in a partnership with civil society organizations (Conectas Human Rights, Brazilian Forum on Public Safety, Fundação Avina and Sou da Paz Institute) launch today a series of public debates on The Brazil we want! Street debates #APOLITICAQUEEUQUERO (THE POLITICS I WANT) in São Paulo - Brazil. The meeting initiative - the first one of a series of three to debate actions regarding politics, police and the city - was born from a meeting held at São Paulo Law School, with professors, students and representatives of non-governmental organizations last Monday. The purpose was to discuss what the contribution should be from the university, and specifically from a law school, to the public debate raised by the number of protests taking place all over Brazil in the past weeks. Today, there is a discrepancy between political and juridical speeches and what people are demanding on the streets. Brazil's National Congress and state governments seem incapable of responding to the demands with the necessary speed and boldness. We need to create public forums to debate and reach constitutional alternatives. The higher education institutions can contribute with that, argues the dean of São Paulo Law School, Oscar Vilhena. The professors Oscar Vilhena and Luciana Gross Cunha from São Paulo Law School, Marco Antonio Teixeira and Claudio Couto of EAESP, Pedro Vieira Abramovay of Rio de Janeiro Law School, and the undergraduate student of São Paulo Law School and vice-president of the School's Academic Center Lucas Borges will participate. The academic centers of the Law Schools at USP, PUC-SP and Mackenzie universities also support the event.Social networks? The Brazil we want!
