2018 retrospective: Events that shook FGV

Relevant public debate issues are always on the agenda at Fundação Getulio Vargas, and the second four months of 2018 were no different. Education, law, management, economics and finance were some of the main topics discussed by officials and experts from both inside and outside FGV at our events.

Teacher training in early childhood education was the theme of a seminar held on May 9 by the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Education Policies (CEIPE) of FGV’s Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (EBAPE). The 130th anniversary of the abolition of slavery was celebrated on Mar 15-18. The meeting brought together guest researchers, both Brazilian and foreign, who addressed matters related to the situation of the black population after the abolition.

A series of lectures was devoted to discussions on legislation and the judiciary. The future of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) was discussed on May 9. The end of the Jurisdictional Prerogative was one of the most relevant public debate issues and reached the National Congress. During a public hearing, professor Ivar A. Hartmann, from FGV’s Rio de Janeiro Law School (Direito Rio) presented the findings of the fifth Supreme in Numbers report to the congressmen. In August, the then Chief Justice of the STF, Cármen Lúcia, attended the launch of the Law and Development research project.

Other important issues were discussed. FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE) proposed a debate on monetary policy. FGV Social – Center for Social Policy held a workshop with federal public officials on the impact and improvements of the Family Allowance program.

Current issues also prompted important events. The seminar “SportsChain – Pre-2018 World Cup Seminar” brought together Brazilian soccer icons, such as coaches Carlos Alberto Parreira and Vanderlei Luxemburgo, and former player Zinho. And if Fake News dominated the debate in the virtual world, international guest Klaus Zillikens, Consul General of Germany, was responsible for addressing the issue in a lecture on the subject organized by FGV’s Brazilian School of Economics and Finance (EPGE).

Tomorrow we will address the events that made the news from September to December.
