2022 elections: FGV Sao Paulo Law School and Folha monitor disinformation and fake news

The newspaper Folha de S. Paulo and the Online Disinformation Monitoring Center for the 2022 Elections at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo Law School have formed a partnership to track all the rulings filed with the Superior Electoral Court and regional electoral courts involving disinformation, inaccurate information, fake news and related subjects. The aim of this initiative is to produce explanatory content for society about conflicts judged by Brazil’s electoral courts and the consequences of their decisions.

The rulings will be tracked by a search system and screened by 16 law students as part of their undergraduate course. The most relevant ones will be selected and analyzed by a team of 10 professors and researchers in the fields of constitutional law, freedom of expression, criminal law, law and technology, and law and institutions, serving as a basis for analysis and comments published by Folha de S. Paulo.

The Online Disinformation Monitoring Center for the 2022 Elections is coordinated by the Center for Education and Research in Innovation (CEPI) and the Center for Competition, Public Policy, Innovation and Technology Research (Compitt) at the FGV Sao Paulo Law School.

Advances in technology and the use of extensive databases will enable court rulings to be selected more quickly and effectively, says Alexandre Pacheco da Silva, CEPI’s coordinator.

Caio Mario da Silva Pereira Neto, Compitt’s coordinator, says that the number of cases submitted to the Superior Electoral Court, especially those related to messages attacking the election process and the use of electronic voting machines, is likely to increase.
