Brazil has two digital devices per inhabitant, FGV study reveals 

Brazil has 440 million digital devices (computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones) in use, or two per inhabitant, according to the 32nd edition of FGVcia’s Annual Study on the Brazilian IT Market and IT Use at Companies, which was launched on Thursday, May 20 by the Center for Applied Information Technology (FGVcia) at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo School of Business Administration.

The study also reveals that four cellphones are sold for every TV set in the country. Regarding the number of computers, this year Brazil will surpass 200 million computers (desktops, laptops and tablets) in use, i.e., 9.4 for every 10 inhabitants or 94% per capita. In 2020, 11 million of these devices were sold, down 8% from 2019. Regarding smartphones, an estimated 242 million of them were in use in Brazil in June of this year, i.e., more than one per inhabitant.

According to FGVcia’s research coordinator, Professor Fernando Meirelles, the annual cost of IT per user was R$48,000 in 2020. This figure refers to the IT expenses and investments of the companies surveyed last year divided by the number of users.

According to the survey, TOTVS and SAP are the joint market leaders for enterprise resource planning (ERM) systems, with a market share of 33% each. Oracle has 11% and other companies have 23% in all. TOTVS leads among small companies while SAP is the top choice among large companies. Microsoft continues to dominate end user categories, with a market share of more than 90%.

When it comes to business intelligence and analytics, the biggest players are SAP, Oracle, TOTVS, Microsoft, Qlik and IBM, in that order, with a combined market share of 95%. Finally, the study also showed that Google, Qlik and Zoom experienced the fastest growth in software market share in 2020 and so far in 2021.
