A policy paper presented to the G20 by the Center for Global Law Research (CPDG) at Fundação Getulio Vargas’s Rio de Janeiro Law School has been approved and it will be published in June of this year. The document, titled “Challenge in the multilateral debate on international forest regulation: an analysis on the applicability and impact of the EUDR for the G20,” examines the regulatory and operational challenges of the new European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and formulates recommendations to facilitate its non-discriminatory application.

CPDG’s proposal, drawn up in partnership with the Centre for Global Governance Studies at Leuven Catholic University in Belgium, was submitted to the T20, a G20 engagement group that brings together think tanks and research centers in G20 members and guest countries. The T20 wants to receive different contributions aimed at providing answers to global challenges. The G20 is a group that brings together the world’s leading economies in order to rethink public policies at an international level.

The policy paper will be discussed by “Task Force 4 – Trade and Investment for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth,” which is dedicated to analyzing how trade and investment mechanisms can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The results of the research could provide a basis for suggestions and options to incorporate specific demands from countries that, like Brazil, will be most affected by the new European regulation.

Coordinated by Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida of the FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School, CPDG studies governance and international law in the following areas:

• Global regulation;
• Global litigation;
• Climate change and forestregulation;
• Human rights and democracy.

The team that is analyzing forest regulation, made up of researchers Gabriel Ralile, Lucas Vollers, Jana Leal and Natália Barcelos, is conducting a project in partnership with the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS) about the impacts of the EUDR.
