The Center for Global Law Research (CPDG) at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Rio de Janeiro Law School, in partnership with the Centre for Global Governance Studies at Leuven Catholic University in Belgium, recently presented a policy paper on deforestation to the T20, a G20 engagement group that brings together think tanks and research centers in G20 members and guest countries. The paper, titled “An Analysis for the G20 on the Applicability and Impact of the EUDR for the International Community", examines the rules set out in the new European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), its interaction with international trade rules under the World Trade Organization and its implementation mechanisms. It also presents recommendations to facilitate the non-discriminatory application of the new regulation.

The T20 wants to receive contributions in different formats, including public policy proposals, to respond to global challenges in various areas of knowledge. The G20 is a group that brings together the world’s leading economies, and this initiative aims to rethink public policies on a global scale.

The results of the research by CPDG and the Centre for Global Governance Studies could be used as a basis for suggestions and options to incorporate specific demands from countries that, like Brazil, will be most affected by the new European forest regulation.

The policy paper was selected to be discussed by Task Force 4 – Trade and Investment for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth, which is dedicated to analyzing how trade and investment mechanisms can contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. The proposal is due to be published in June of this year, after it has gone through a peer review.

The team that is analyzing forest regulation, made up of researchers Gabriel Ralile, Lucas Vollers, Jana Leal and Natália Barcelos, is conducting a project in partnership with theInstitute for Climate and Society (iCS) about the impacts of the EUDR.
