Consumer price inflation rises in Brazil in last week of June

Released on June 30 by FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV IBRE), the Weekly Consumer Price Index (IPC-S) varied 1.19% – 0.02 percentage point (p.p.) above the last published rate. With this result, the index accumulates a 3% increase in the year and 4.43% in the last 12 months.

Four of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded a higher price variation. The Housing group recorded the highest variation (1.51% to 1.93%). In this expense class, it is important to highlight the behavior of the household power bill item, whose rate went from 7.16% to 8.83%.

The following groups also recorded rate variations: Education, Reading and Recreation (-0.07% to 0.28%), Communication (0.22% to 0.32%) and Miscellaneous Expenses (0.10% to 0.15%). In these classes, it is worth highlighting the behavior of the items: show rooms (-0.70% to 0.15%), monthly fee for cable TV (0.17% to 0.54%) and religious and funerary service (0.24% to 0.62%), respectively.

On the other hand, the Food (1.80% to 1.59%), Transport (1.45% to 1.25%), Clothing (0.73% to 0.20%) and Health and Personal Care (0.49% to 0.40%) showed negative variation rates. The main contributing items in these categories were vegetables (10.88% to -1.90%), gasoline (5.55% to 4.12%), clothing (0.82% to 0.26%) and toiletries and personal care products (-0.05% to -0.67%), respectively.

The next calculation of the Weekly Consumer Price Index, with data collected until July 7, will be disclosed on July 9. The complete study is available on the website.
