Documentary is awarded at International Film Festival on socio-environmental issues
The students of FGV’s Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (EAESP), Isabella Cruvinel Santiago and Jonas Batista, were awarded at the 8th Ecofalante International Film Festival for the short film “Mãe do Mangue” (“Mangrove Mother”). The production is the result of undergraduate thesis “Mãe do Mangue: trabalhos e desafios das mulheres marisqueiras da RESEX de Canavieiras” (“Mangrove Mother: the work and challenges of the shellfish catchers of the Canavieiras Extractive Reserve”), presented by the students in 2018, under the guidance of Professor Isabela Curado.
The film won second place by the popular vote and by the jury of the Festival, considered the most important short-film event in South America dedicated to socio-environmental issues, and which this year, in its largest edition, featured 133 films from 32 countries.
The documentary presents the life and work of women in the Women’s Network of Fishing Extractive Communities of Southern Bahia and its empowerment process. As the research shows, the film reveals the surplus labor of the women working as shellfish catchers, at the domestic and community level – as well as the challenges arising from the imbalance between genders in this role, such as domestic violence, early pregnancy, investment in the professionalization of children, and labor devaluation.
The production also addresses the emergence of the Women’s Fishing Network of Southern Bahia to give visibility to the demands and needs of this group in the region. Since its inception in 2009, an increase has been observed in women’s political and community engagement, which takes place through periodic meetings, creating a safe space for dialogue on domestic violence, social security rights, occupational health and safety, income generation projects, and strategies for the insertion of women in public policies for gender affirmation.
