Elections: Digital Democracy Room finds new partners to monitor the political debate
FGV’s Department of Public Policy Analysis (DAPP) has partnered with media outlets for the coverage of the 2018 elections. A series of weekly contributions by the Digital Democracy Room in the media will focus on the election campaign, which officially began last Thursday, August 16. The goal is to help promote a more democratic election process by analyzing social media, while also monitoring the main agendas of the political debate and data related to candidates and main public policy themes.
On Mondays, a column on Nexo Jornal will discuss voter behavior on social media. On Tuesdays, Marco Ruediger, Director of the FGV DAPP, writes a column on newspaper Folha de S.Paulo about politics based on an analysis of data, particularly from social media. On Thursdays, the DAPP will publish on Estadão Broadcast– Grupo Estado’s real-time news publishing system – the FGV DAPP Report, a weekly report of the highlights of Brazilian politics on social media.
Researchers from the DAPP will also talk to the hosts of Jornal da CBN 2nd edition about misinformation and the political debate on social media. On Fridays, during “Edição das 10h” on GloboNews, researchers comment on the performance of presidential candidates on social media, presenting data and charts. In addition, throughout the week, the Digital Democracy Room publishes analyses of misinformation cases in the political debate, in partnership with fact-checking agency Lupa.
“The web will be a venue for debate around the public agenda for the next administration, as well as disputes between political and social players. The texts will address these issues always based on data analysis, providing information to the debate and breaking down the repercussions among Brazilians”, said Marco Ruediger, DAPP Director.
