Event debates freedom of expression, social networks and democracy

On March 13, the Center for Judicial Innovation, Administration and Research at FGV Knowledge, in partnership with Rede Globo and supported by the Brazilian Institute for Education, Development and Research (IDP), is holding a seminar called “Freedom of Expression, Social Networks and Democracy.” This public meeting will take place from 9 am to 6 pm at the FGV Cultural Center.

Based on a contemporary vision of digital democracy, aspects of online governance will be discussed from the perspective of the democratic rule of law, including cross-cutting issues related to data protection, artificial intelligence and its regulations, technology, communication and freedom of expression.

This in-person event will be presided over by Rede Globo journalist Maju Coutinho. The speakers will be Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court and Superior Electoral Court; Justice Gilmar Mendes of the Federal Supreme Court; Justice and Public Security Minister Flávio Dino; Justice Luis Felipe Salomão of the Superior Court of Appeals, who coordinates the Center for Judicial Innovation, Administration and Research at FGV Knowledge; Justice Antonio Saldanha Palheiro of the Superior Court of Appeals; and Justice Marco Aurélio Bellizze of the Superior Court of Appeals.

The event will also feature the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco; the speaker of the House of Representatives, Arthur Lira; the director general of the Federal Police, Andrei Augusto Passos Rodrigues; and Judge Elton Leme of the Rio de Janeiro State Court of Appeals, among other official. The private sector will be represented by the president of Fundação Getulio Vargas, Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal; the legal directors of Rede Globo, Andreia Saad and Antonio Cláudio Ferreira Netto; Google Brasil’s government relations director, Marcelo Lacerda; Folha de S. Paulo journalist Patricia Campos Mello; and Rede Globo journalist Heraldo Pereira, among other guests.
