FGV launches digital-focused communication school
Fundação Getulio Vargas is launching the School of Communication, Media and Information (FGV ECMI), which will pioneer education emphasizing digital communication and related fields such as the social sciences, data science and linguistics.
In 2022, the school will run its first entrance exam for its Digital Communication Undergraduate Course. It will also offer master’s, MBA and practical extension courses. Active learning methodologies will be prioritized in the curriculum of all its courses and there will be both practical and theoretical activities from the beginning, including the extensive use of case studies and state-of-the-art laboratories.
The focus will be on developing skills through workshops guided by the new professional demands of the digital communication market. Accordingly, the school will have highly qualified professors, educated at renowned institutions in Brazil and abroad, using internationally recognized teaching methods. The school will also invest in student networking and professional placement experiences.
“FGV’s new digital communication school will concentrate on society’s most transformative aspects at this moment, influencing administration, economics and politics. Thus, FGV is combining technology, data and the social sciences in the transforming dynamics of the 21st century and it will train new generations of communication specialists, analysts and information managers, giving them a deep understanding of social changes and strategic modeling of businesses and policies in the digital world, where symbols and language will shape world views and the decisions of organizations and leaders,” says Marco Aurelio Ruediger, the dean of FGV ECMI.
Among other things, the new digital communication course will stand out for its focus on data-based analysis and strategic decision making, as well as training on the use of data science techniques to develop communication products and services. Students will also gain an understanding of the specific features of digital media in the communication market.
Conceived by Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Department of Public Policy Analysis (FGV DAPP), FGV ECMI combines the solid academic track record of FGV – the world’s third most influential think tank – with FGV DAPP’s extensive experience in applying technology and data science to innovate and propose solutions in the field of communication. This experience is illustrated by activities carried out in partnership with organizations such as Brazil’s House of Representatives, Itaú and Greenpeace; the Digital Democracy project, conducted together with the German Embassy in Brasilia; and the Digital Democracy Room, in partnership with international funders such as the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), Open Society Foundations (OSF) and Luminate.
Laboratories and extracurricular activities
FGV ECMI will have three laboratories. The first will be based on the well-established FGV DAPP, which will be renamed DAPP Lab. It will continue to carry out applied research on digital communication and social networks, using an exclusive methodology for monitoring and analysis.
The second laboratory, called Innovation Cube, is already starting to operate. It will focus on exploring digital games and the metaverse as new digital communication platforms. It will provide opportunities for experimental research involving a variety of digital technologies, including the development of innovative ideas by students, workshops, hackathons and mini courses. The Innovation Cube will concentrate on four themes: digital games, video and multimedia content, mixed and augmented virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. Thus, experiences mixing theoretical subjects with practical workshops, mini courses at the labs and complementary activities will be intense.
The third laboratory, called Stream Lab, will focus on understanding, designing and producing content and digital channels for platforms such as YouTube and TikTok.
FGV ECMI will also promote the exchange of knowledge and best practices in education and research beyond national borders through its program of international activities. In this way, it will offer new academic perspectives to its professors and students, stimulating creativity, diversity and innovation and ensuring the continuous improvement of teaching and research carried out at the school. FGV ECMI’s students will also be supported by internship and placement programs, helping them position themselves in the best possible way in the job market in Brazil and abroad. In particular, the placement program was designed to connect not only students, but also graduates. It has two areas of action: professional placements and entrepreneurship.
The school will also offer scholarships, opportunities for introductory scientific research and internships as part of its projects.
