FGV opens new Sao Paulo School of Economics campus
In August, Fundação Getulio Vargas opened the new campus for the Sao Paulo School of Economics (FGV EESP), at 365 Rua Doutor Plínio Barreto, Bela Vista, Sao Paulo. The opening ceremony, held during “Economist’s Month” in Brazil, was presided over by the school’s dean, Lilian Furquim, and featured a speech by the president of the Brazilian Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto.
In her welcome address, Furquim said that FGV EESP was created to add to the legacy that Fundação Getulio Vargas had already built in the field of economics. “FGV now has the two most productive economics schools in South America, which complement each other and strengthen the advancement of economic science. Our pillars of excellence are world-class academic research and teaching. We offer everything from undergraduate courses to C-level academic training, and our teaching staff is made up of competent researchers, professors and market professionals, who have created a diverse, pluralistic, open and vibrant environment. This has given us a unique profile,” she said.
The event also discussed topics such as inflation, monetary policy, the labor market and current economic challenges. Campos Neto highlighted financial innovations developed by the Brazilian Central Bank and shared some figures on the growing popularity of the PIX instant payment method. “PIX is a way of engaging people in this digitalization movement. That’s why we created this payment system. We thought it would be popular, but we never imagined it would become quite so popular so quickly. We thought that in six months there would be 2 million users, but we achieved that in just a few weeks,” he said.
Still on the subject of technological innovations in the economy, the president of the Brazilian Central Bank mentioned Open Finance as an example. “You can now log into your bank’s app, download data from another bank and make a comparison via Open Finance. We already see many people investing in what we call a finance marketplace, which is an environment where you can have all your accounts and all your data. Here, the aim is to have portability and real-time comparability of all products throughout the Brazilian financial system. It’s a great step forward for the financial system to have this marketplace where you have real-time comparability and portability,” he said.
