FGV organizes 6th Latin American think tank meeting

Uruguay hosted the 6th Latin American Think Tank Summit in September, promoted by University of Pennsylvania and organized by FGV. Held at the Latin American Center for Human Economy (CLAEH) in Montevideo, the meeting was attended by 60 Latin American think tanks, international observers and development banks.

The theme for this year’s edition was the role of think tanks in turbulent times characterized by growing nationalism, protectionism and migratory crisis on a global scale. FGV was represented by the Project Coordinator of its International Affairs Division (DINT), Klaus Stier, who led the panel on the future of think tanks and public policy assistance, and by the Coordinator of the Center for Justice and Society (CJUS) of FGV’s Rio de Janeiro Law School (Direito Rio), professor Michael Freitas Mohallem, who presented his experience in research on corruption and organized crime, specifically highlighting his studies on Operation Car Wash.

The meeting also included lectures by key Latin American authorities and intellectuals. The event’s keynote address was given by Enrique V. Iglesias, who chaired the Inter-American Development Bank for 16 years (1988-2005). At the invitation of FGV, Brazilian Ambassador Bruno de Rísios Bath, representative of Brazil’s permanent delegation to Mercosur and the Latin American Integration Association (LAIA), gave a distinguished lecture on the block’s integration trends and current situation.

The Latin American think tank meetings have been a part of the global agenda for regional events since 2013, bringing together some of the leading knowledge centers in the world. Their dynamic presentations favor both the sharing of good management and strategic performance practices for think tanks, as well as opinions and discussions on the political, economic and social scenario in Latin America. The first two meetings were organized and hosted at FGV. The others took place in Argentina, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and now Uruguay.
