FGV wins Startup Award for University of the Year
FGV was declared the University of the Year in the 2020 Startup Awards. Organized by the Brazilian Association of Startups (Abstartups), the Startup Awards is the main awards scheme for Brazil’s startups. Its goal is to recognize the sector’s most influential professionals and companies.
Commitment to innovation and encouragement of creative thinking to devise innovative solutions are among the features of the Rio de Janeiro Law School, which was responsible for several initiatives that helped FGV win the award. The school’s Legal Practice Center (NPJ) runs activities aimed at startups and its Legal Advice Lab for New Technologies (LAJUNT) provides legal advice to new entrepreneurs on different aspects of building a business. Since it was launched, LAJUNT, which is supervised by lawyers Hélder Galvão and Felipe Hanszmann, has helped 20 startups in sectors such as renewable energy, e-commerce, legaltech, accounting, education and diversity.
According to Professor André Mendes, NPJ’s coordinator, “We were delighted to learn about this award. Supervisors Hélder and Felipe have done incredible work with students at LAJUNT. It’s a space for practical legal training, focusing on new skills and multidisciplinary content related to technology’s impact on law.”
Within the scope of non-degree graduate courses, FGV competed in the awards based on various initiatives, including pioneering continuing education courses such as “Law for Startups and Entrepreneurs,” “Data Protection Officer Training” and “Programming for Lawyers,” all designed to train professionals to tackle challenges related to startups and compliance with the new Personal Data Protection Law. According to the coordinator of these courses, Professor Rafael Almeida, these programs help entrepreneurs understand legal issues and come up with more creative solutions to succeed in business. In addition to these initiatives, FGV’s Rio de Janeiro Law School offers several modules related to these subjects in its “LLM in Law: Innovation and Technology” and “LLM in Law: Business” programs, as well as in its undergraduate law course.
The awards’ results were announced on October 23, during the 2020 CASE Startup Summit, the biggest online and free event about entrepreneurship and innovation in Latin America.
