“The Fourth Constructive Generation in Rio de Janeiro”: FGV Art exhibition extended to January 2024

The exhibition brings together works by 46 artists in Rio de Janeiro (whether born in the city, living there or visiting it). There are no generational or language boundaries that have defined the city in the 21st century, “with new perspectives in the social field of circulation of works of art.”

Launched in September, FGV Art is a new space for artistic experimentation and current debates regarding art and culture, seeking to encourage dialogue with the most creative and diverse sectors of society.

The opening event was a big hit, attracting many professionals and generating some significant results:

  • 1,447 visitors
  • 47 artists
  • 68 works of art

Through education and knowledge, FGV Art is committed to supporting and encouraging the arts in Brazil, in line with Fundação Getulio Vargas’ mission to stimulate the country’s socioeconomic development in order to build a more modern nation.

According to curator Paulo Herkenhoff, the exhibition’s success is down to the artists. “There is no successful exhibition without good artists. This exhibition has something that captures people’s attention, because it has a very diverse set of intentions,” he says.

He adds that the fourth constructive generation is an intriguing topic. The first one was in the 1950s, involving geometric abstraction, while the second began with Brazil’s dictatorship and lasted until the end of the 1980s. In this period, some artists were tortured and imprisoned. The third generation coincided with the subsequent restoration of democracy, when art was filled with the joy of new freedom. Finally, the fourth constructive generation began in the 21st century, involving the opening up of the cultural agenda.
