Inflation rises in December for families with income between 1 and 2.5 minimum wages

The Consumer Price Index – Class 1 (CPI-C1) rose 0.32% in December – 0.57 percentage point (p.p.) above the 0.25% rate recorded in November. With this result, the indicator accrues an increase of 4.17% in 2018.

In December, the CPI-BR climbed 0.29%. The indicator’s rate in the year was 4.32%, above the rate recorded by CPI-C1.

Six of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded a higher price change: Housing (-1.10% to 0.10%), Food (0.34% to 0.83%), Health and Personal Care (-0.17% to 0.29%), Clothing (0.14% to 0.70 %), Education, Reading and Recreation (0.27% to 0.66%) and Miscellaneous Expenses (0.03% to 0.09%). In these groups, the highlights were the household power bill (-6.04% to -1.05%), dairy products (-4.76% to -3.19%), hygiene and personal care items (-1.10% to 0.36%), clothes (0.29% to 0.87%), tours and vacation (2.92% to 4.41%) and pet food (0.16% to 0.67%).

On the other hand, the Transport (-0.42% to -0.52%) and Communication (0.07% to -0.02%) groups yielded lower rates. In these expense classes, the gasoline (-2.96% to -4.43%) and landline phone and internet packages (0.63% to 0.00%) items were the highlights.

The next CPI-C1 will be released on February 5.
