International event discusses the future of China-Brazil relations

The Coordinator of the Nucleus for China-Brazil Studies of FGV’s Rio de Janeiro Law School (Direito Rio), professor Evandro Menezes de Carvalho, participated in the seminar “The Future of China-Brazil Relations: what role for development in the new government?” as main lecturer, on December 14. The event, which aimed to discuss the prospects and challenges of Chinese-Brazilian relations with the new Brazilian administration, was sponsored by the Fudan Development Institute and the Center for BRICS Studies of Fudan University, in Shanghai. The meeting was attended by professors and Master’s and PhD students, from both Brazil and China.

“The Chinese are anxious to know if Brazil will be an active player in the BRICS during this new administration. It’s too early to answer that question. But the fact is that China-Brazil relations gained such a density that it’s hard to imagine that there could be setbacks, and this includes the BRICS”, said the professor.

About the partnership between Direito Rio and the Center for BRICS Studies of Fudan University, the professor considers that the prospects for bilateral cooperation in 2019 are very good.

“We are planning some joint activities for next year, due to the fact that the BRICS Summit will be in Brazil. And the lecture is already an initiative in the context of preparations for the BRICS Summit in 2019”, he said.

Cooperation between the two institutions began in 2014, with the participation of several FGV students in summer courses in China, where Carvalho also teaches in July. Direito Rio has also been a constant participant in the Shanghai Forum, which is held every year at Fudan University.
