Investment in basic sanitation debated at seminar

With the purpose of discussing investment in basic sanitation in Sao Paulo, the Revista Conjuntura Econômica (Brazilian Economy Magazine), of FGV’s Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE), will bring together experts and representatives the public sector in the “5th Sanitation Seminar – high-impact social investment” to be held on July 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Sao Paulo. Lecturers will discuss project financing, regulation and development methods.
According to Claudio Conceição, Superintendent of Publication at IBRE, the seminar will feature proposals to assist the development of public policies for the sector. "One of the country’s major challenges – among many – is sanitation. Improper sanitation available to the population, in addition to welfare issues, creates another problem: the cost it generates in terms of diseases caused by lack of treated water and sewage, raising government spending on the public healthcare system. On the eve of the presidential elections, bringing together the main leaders in the sector will be an important contribution to this debate”, said Conceição.
The event will feature an opening lecture by the National Secretary of Environmental Sanitation of the Ministry of Cities, Adailton Ferreira Trindade. Laura Bedeschi, Head of the Department of Environmental Sanitation of the BNDES, and Antonio Gil Padilha B. Silveira, representative of the Sanitation and Infrastructure Executive Office (DESAN), of Caixa Econômica, will present the actions of their areas in Panel I, which will address funding.
Panel II will discuss the regulatory aspects with Gesner Oliveira, professor and coordinator of FGV’s Group of Infrastructure Economics & Environmental Solutions, Rogério Tavares, member of the Abdib and Vice President of Institutional Relations at AEGEA, and Joisa Dutra, Director of FGV’s Center for Regulation and Infrastructure Studies (CERI).
In the afternoon, experts will discuss the structure and design of sanitation projects. The last panel will feature Rafael Rossi, Director of New Business at BRK Ambiental; Hamilton Amadeo, President of AEGEA; Edson Carlos, President of Instituto Trata Brasil; Carlos Henrique da Cruz Lima, officer at Águas do Brasil; and Solange Monteiro, editor of the Revista Conjuntura Econômica (Brazilian Economy Magazine). The event will take place in FGV’s 9 de Julho Auditorium (Rua Itapeva, 432, ground floor – Bela Vista, Sao Paulo).
