Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Rio de Janeiro Law School is now accepting applications for the first edition of the Rio School on Global Governance, Democracy and Human Rights Course, run by FGV’s Jean Monnet Center of Excellence and funded by the European Commission as part of the Erasmus+ Program. The deadline for applications is February 5.

The Rio School is a four-month hybrid program, taught in English and Portuguese, with the aim of expanding knowledge about the global governance practices of global and regional international organizations. A series of lectures will provide an understanding and critical analysis of international organizations and European Union institutions, their decision-making processes and challenges for their strategy and external objectives in Latin America.

The FGV EU-South American School on Global Governance is a “European Union Center of Excellence” – the highest academic title granted by the European Union as part of its Erasmus+ Program. This means that the EU authorizes FGV to run courses in the center’s broad research areas: Global Regulation, Global Litigation, and Human Rights and Democracy.

The Rio School’s lectures will address a variety of topics within the center’s main research areas, including the European Union’s emergence as a regulatory player, the regulatory authority of new non-state subjects and actors in the formation of the law of international organizations and its relevance to global governance. Informal and multi-level decision-making mechanisms at regional and global levels and their impact on global regulation will be addressed. The course will also explore promotion of the rule of law and human rights in Latin America by international entities.

According to the course’s coordinator, Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, “The new course features an internationally renowned faculty and guest professors and experts from different professional backgrounds and fields of knowledge, a contemporary curriculum, an innovative educational methodology and a carefully selected student body. This is the first program of its kind in Latin America.”

The program’s classes will stand out for the involvement of high-level academics and specialists from domestic and international partner institutions in countries such as Belgium, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada and Chile.

The Jean Monnet Center of Excellence’s professors seek not only to guide research on topics related to global governance and to encourage new generations of professors and researchers, but also to prepare students for their work in the global job market, which increasingly demands people capable of dealing with different legal systems within a new world order.

The course is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students, lawyers and professionals, especially in the areas of law, international relations and social sciences.

The Rio School, coordinated by Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida of the FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School’s Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, is aligned with the center’s goal to become a focal point for studies of global governance in the European Union and South America, building on previous initiatives funded by the European Commission (the Jean Monnet Module from 2010 to 2013 and the Jean Monnet Chair from 2015 to 2019).

The 2023 edition of the Rio School on Global Governance, Democracy and Human Rights will take place from March 1 to June 14, on Wednesdays, from 3:50 pm to 5:30 pm (GMT-3), in person in FGV’s main building in Rio de Janeiro (Praia de Botafogo, 190) or online via Zoom.

You can apply for the course until February 5 on the school’s website.
