Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Rio de Janeiro Law School is now accepting applications to participate in the first edition of the Rio Course on Regional and International Dispute Settlement (Rio CRIDS), an activity carried out by the FGV Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, funded by the European Commission as part of the Erasmus+ Program. The deadline for applications for the 2024 Rio Course on Regional and International Dispute Settlement is January 17, 2024.

Rio CRIDS is a five-month hybrid program aimed at expanding knowledge of sub-regional, regional and international dispute resolution practices via international courts and tribunals, international arbitration and conflict mediation, focusing in particular on the European Union’s participation in international courts and tribunals.

The FGV EU-South American School on Global Governance is a “European Union Center of Excellence” – the highest academic title granted by the European Union as part of its Erasmus+ Program. This means that the EU authorizes FGV to run courses in the center’s different research areas.

The lectures that are part of Rio CRIDS will cover a variety of topics within the center’s main research areas, such as transnational arbitration, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, international arbitration policies, transnational litigation, negotiation and mediation in international disputes, and the Court of Justice of the European Union.

According to Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, the course’s coordinator, “Rio CRIDS features an internationally renowned faculty and visiting professors and experts from different professional backgrounds and fields of knowledge. It has a contemporary curriculum, an innovative educational methodology and a carefully selected student body. It is an unprecedented program in Latin America.”

The program of classes includes the involvement of high-level academics and specialists from national and international partner institutions. The course is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students, lawyers and other professionals, particularly in the areas of law, international relations and the social sciences, among others.

The professors who make up the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence seek not only to guide research on issues related to global challenges and encourage new generations of professors and researchers, but also to prepare students to work in a global job market, which has a growing demand for people capable of dealing with different legal systems within a new world order.

Rio CRIDS, coordinated by Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida of the FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School’s Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, is aligned with the center’s goal to become a focal point for studies of global governance in the European Union and South America, building on previous initiatives funded by the European Commission (the Jean Monnet Module from 2010 to 2013, the Jean Monnet Chair from 2015 to 2019, and the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence from 2019 to 2023).

The 2024 edition of the Rio Course on Regional and International Dispute Settlement will take place from February 21 to June 5, on Wednesdays, from 2 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.
