New book discusses the career of diplomat Rubens Barbosa
Based on testimonials for the Oral History project of FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC), the book “Um diplomata a serviço do Estado” [A diplomat in the service of the State], will be launched by FGV Press and shows the career of diplomat and former ambassador Rubens Barbosa in his missions representing Brazil throughout the world from 1962 to 2004, including the control of the country’s embassies in London and Washington.
Barbosa was one of the protagonists of Brazilian diplomacy over the past 40 years, decisively participating in the rapprochement of Brazil with Argentina, the creation of Mercosur, the valuation of commercial negotiations at the Itamaraty, the firmness of the country in negotiations for the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), the civilized transition from the FHC to the Lula administration abroad, among other great accomplishments.
In the pages of the book, the diplomat explains important decisions that needed to be made, directly or indirectly, to benefit Brazilian foreign policy. Through an honest account, Barbosa presents his point of view of the events that occurred during the half century of his life dedicated to the country’s affairs.
“Throughout my career, both within and outside of Itamaraty, especially when I assumed leadership roles, I followed a sense of clearly defined priorities. I accepted and never refused the challenges that I faced, acting with initiative, exclusive dedication and loyalty to the Rio Branco House”, he said.
