Rio de Janeiro Law School research center launches platform on European anti-deforestation standard

The Center for Global Law Research (CPDG) at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Rio de Janeiro Law School has announced the launch of a digital platform for a project called “Monitoring the Regulatory Impact on Brazil of the European Union’s New Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products.” Developed in partnership with the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS), the initiative aims to comprehensively analyze challenges related to the new European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and its impacts on Brazil, focusing on three main areas:

  • Regulatory analysis: in-depth analysis of the international, regional and national regulatory environment regarding forests;
  • Legal and economic impacts: investigation of the legal, political and economic effects of the EUDR in Brazil, emphasizing impacts on international trade, supply chains and the Brazilian legal order;
  • Training for decision makers: publications will offer a comprehensive guide for politicians, public managers, business leaders and other stakeholders seeking to navigate complex European regulations.

The digital platform, called “Regulating Forests: Monitoring the Impacts of the EUDR,” is a comprehensive portal for obtaining in-depth knowledge about the EUDR and its effects. Through an intuitive interface, visitors have access to a wide range of resources, including reports and policy papers, news and links of interest. The site also provides a dedicated space for the submission of external contributions related to the project.

The project is led by CPDG coordinator and FGV Sao Paulo Law School professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida and her team of researchers, made up of Gabriel Ralile, Lucas Vollers, Jana Leal and Natália Barcelos. Created in April 2023, CPDG conducts research and studies on law and global governance, taking into account the context and specific demands of the Global South. It includes transnational activities and maintains links with academic institutions in Brazil and around the world to share knowledge and develop joint initiatives and partnerships.

CPDG has the following research areas:

  • Global regulation;
  • Global litigation;
  • Climate change and forest regulation;
  • Human rights and democracy.
