Scholars discuss relationship between dictatorship and business community at seminar

The Brazilian dictatorship that started with the 1964 coup is known for authoritarianism, repression and military presence. However, it was a political regime that had significant support from the business community, especially large enterprises and those connected to foreign capital. To discuss this subject, FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) held the “National Seminar on Entrepreneurship and Dictatorship in Brazil”, in partnership with UFRJ, UFRRJ and UERJ, from October 1 to 4.

The event was hosted in the four institutions and aimed to advance understanding of the role that entrepreneurs played throughout the dictatorship. There were eight roundtables, including one dedicated to launching books on the event’s subject. A total of 30 lectures by experts devoted to researching the topic in recent years summarized, discussed and consolidated recent productions in the field of History and Social Sciences.

The discussed topics included “The military and entrepreneurs in the Brazilian dictatorship”; “Business community and repression of workers in the Brazilian and Argentine dictatorships”; “Rural ruling class and the Brazilian dictatorship”; “Foreign capital and the dictatorship in Brazil”; “Business community, economic groups and dictatorship in Brazil"; "Construction and infrastructure business community and the dictatorship”; and “The business community, workers and the dictatorship”.

In addition to the lectures, the seminar provided space for launching the books “Repressão a militares na ditadura pós-1964” [Military repression in the post-1964 dictatorship], by Cláudio Beserra de Vasconcelos; “Política Econômica nos Anos de Chumbo” [Economic Policy in the Lead Years], by Pedro Campos and Rafael Brandão; “O Negócio do Século: o acordo nuclear Brasil-Alemanha” [The Deal of the Century: the Brazil-Germany nuclear agreement], by Rafael Vaz da Motta Brandão; and “Ditadura, anistia e transição política no Brasil (1964-1979)” [Dictatorship, amnesty and political transition in Brazil (1964-1979], by Renato Lemos.

The seminar is the result of an initiative by the Business Community and Dictatorship in Brazil Workgroup, created in partnership by UFRJ’s Laboratory for Military Studies in Politics (LEMP) and UFRRJ’s Laboratory for Economics and History (LEHI).
