Seminar addresses application of high-dimensional statistical concepts
As data collection through increasingly sophisticated physical mechanisms becomes easier, society is facing a new paradigm in statistics, in which there are many more samples than parameters to be collected. To explore this subject, the FGV´s School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp) will hold a seminar titled “A brief tour of high-dimensional statistics” on September 12, starting at 4 pm. The event will take place in Auditorium 537 in FGV’s main building, at Praia de Botafogo, 190, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro.
The aim of the presentation is to illustrate some problems in this area and show how to get around them, in order to encourage people to study this modern area of statistics, which has recently become more prominent and is increasingly important for understanding both theoretic and practical aspects of data science. The seminar will address the classic problem of linear regression and its behavior as the number of explanatory variables increases. Nonintuitive geometric aspects in large spaces will also be presented.
