Seminar discusses women’s perspectives and challenges in Mathematics

FGV’s School of Applied Mathematics (EMAp) is holding, on May 7, from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., an event in celebration of International Day of Women in Mathematics. The meeting, which will be held at auditorium 306 of the FGV Main Office (Praia de Botafogo, 190, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, RJ), aims to discuss the low level of female representation and the obstacles that women face at all stages of the Mathematics career. The event is intended for the math community in general, irrespective of gender.

The Academic Seminar, coordinated by professors Maria Soledad Aronna (FGV-Rio) and Alessia Mandini (PUC-Rio), will be divided into three thematic panels. In the first one, Professor Christina Brech (USP) will give the lecture “Mulheres na Matemática – Desafios e Conquistas no Brasil” (“Women in Mathematics – Challenges and Achievements in Brazil”). The second lecture discusses “Mulheres nas exatas: o que a Neurociência tem a nos dizer?” (“Women in Exact Sciences: What does neuroscience has to tell us?”), by Fátima C. Smith Erthal (UFRJ) and Karin da Costa Calaza (UFF). Finally, the roundtable “A carreira da mulher na Matemática: obstáculos e possíveis soluções” (“Women’s career in Mathematics: obstacles and possible solutions”) will be held.

The International Day of Women in Mathematics is celebrated on May 12, having been instituted last year during the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics (WM)². This date marks the birth of Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, the sole winner of the Fields Medal. Commemorative initiatives are being held around the world.
