Study identifying the profile of companies that excel in recessions wins prize in international event

The work “Firms’ characteristics and capabilities that enable superior performance in recessions”, by Claudio Ramos Conti (postdoctoral student at FGV’s  Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (EBAPE)), Rafael Burstein Goldszmidt (Professor at FGV EBAPE) and Flávio Carvalho de Vasconcelos (Professor and Director of FGV EBAPE) was the winner of the Best Paper Award, of the 8th International Conference on Strategic Management in Latin America (SMLA). The event, which is held every two years, is co-sponsored by FGV’s Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (EAESP) and the international Journal of Business Research.

In the article, the authors discuss the characteristics of companies that are capable of obtaining superior performance during times of recession. Based on the construction of an integrative model, the researchers investigated the characteristics and competencies that certain organizations had before recession periods, which allowed them to perform well and stand out among their competitors.

According to the study, companies that had superior performance had characteristics such as propensity to recognize opportunities in crises; entrepreneurial orientation; ability to improvise; and flexibility.
