Undergraduate students at the FGV Sao Paulo Law School who are taking a course called “Multidisciplinary Practice Project – AI in Health: A Legal Perspective” visited Sao Paulo Clinical Hospital in April. They were accompanied by Bruno Kunzle, the hospital’s head of analytics, and Natasha Zanaroli Scaldaferri, a lawyer at Inova HC, the hospital’s technological innovation center, who helped them learn about the main legal challenges arising from constant technological transformations in medicine.

The Multidisciplinary Practice Project, coordinated by professors Marina Feferbaum and Roberto Dias, has the mission of enabling innovative solutions and businesses that meet health demands by promoting a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation, mapping challenges, developing and validating health technologies, and connecting players in the health innovation ecosystem.

The students came into contact with the main legal challenges facing the health innovation ecosystem.They also visited the hospital’s Laboratory for Teaching, Research and Innovation in Surgery (LEPIC) to learn about some cutting-edge tools and how they are used in procedures such as laparoscopy, video surgery, videoendoscopy and robot-assisted surgery.

According to professors Feferbaum and Dias, based on this visit and the other activities in the project, the students will propose solutions to tackle issues such as legal and ethical risks in implementing artificial intelligence in the public health system, the incorporation of AI tools and their impact on the business model of health insurers, and legal challenges surrounding the unification of medical records and the impact of this on AI tools.
