Webinar debates succession in Congress
Intense debate about the election of the new House speaker and Senate president is taking place behind the scenes in Brasilia. The choice of the people who will replace Rodrigo Maia and Davi Alcolumbre will also be the subject of a webinar called Succession in the House and Senate, to be held by Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV IBRE) in partnership with the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper. This free virtual meeting will take place on January 28, at 10 am. It will be broadcast on FGV’s YouTube and LinkedIn channels and on Folha de S. Paulo’s YouTube channel.
Carlos Pereira, a professor of political science at FGV EBAPE; Marcus Melo, a professor of politics at Pernambuco Federal University; and Samuel Pessoa, an associate researcher at FGV IBRE, will analyze the race in the House. The two main candidates are Baleia Rossi (Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, Sao Paulo), who is supported by the opposition parties, and Arthur Lira (Progressive Party, Alagoas), backed by President Jair Bolsonaro.
In the Senate, the leading contenders are Simone Tebet (Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, Mato Grosso do Sul) and Rodrigo Pacheco (Democrats Party, Minas Gerais). According to specialists, it is important to understand the impact of these elections on the progress of structural reforms, which are essential for Brazil to resume growth. This is especially true in this second year of the pandemic, in which pressure for high public spending is continuing. The debate’s moderator will be Folha de S. Paulo special reporter Fernando Canzian.
