This week, the Brazilian National Archive and Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa will host an initiative to open the archives for society and work towards safeguarding the country’s document heritage. On June 7, at 10:30 a.m., FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) will open the doors of Casa Acervo CPDOC (Rua Jornalista Orlando Dantas, 60. Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro/RJ) for a meeting with anthropologist Yvonne Maggie and researcher Vivian Fonseca.
An anthropologist, professor emeritus at UFRJ and author of the books “Guerra de orixá” [Orixa war] and “Medo do feitiço” [Fear of the spell], as well as co-author of the books “Raça como retórica” [Race as rhetoric] and “Divisões perigosas” [Dangerous divisions], Maggie received the Commendation of the National Order of Scientific Meritby the Brazilian government in 2008. She will talk about donating her personal archive to CPDOC’s Personal Archives Program. Vivian Fonseca will share her experience in projects based on the Oral History methodology.
The 2nd National Archives Week is an initiative inspired by the National Museums Week, which aims to shed light onto the archives and their insertion into society, besides ensuring compliance with Law No. 12.343/2010, concerning the National Culture Plan (PNC). The purpose of the program is to plan and implement long-term public policiesgeared towards protecting and promoting Brazil’s cultural diversity. One of these initiatives is established in Target 28, designed to expand the offer of events and spaces involving cultural activities and to encourage citizens to visit archives, museums, libraries, exhibits, theatres, movie theaters, dance and circus performances, in addition to music concerts.
